Portovenere rises on a tiny peninsula on the western side of the Gulf of Poets, which culminates with three isles: Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. Portovenere is one of the most evocative villages of the area.
Its name (Portus Veneris) derives from the old temple dedicated to the goddess Venus, built on the cliff and now replaced by
S. Peter's church. The S. Lorenzo church and the 17th century castle lay on the higher part of the village and are certainly worth
a visit, since they offer unique views over the Cinque Terre coast at sunset.
Path N° 1, linking Portovenere to the Cinque Terre, starts from the ancient city walls.
Portovenere and its archipelago (Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto) are part of the "Regional Natural Park of Portovenere".
Palmaria is the only inhabited isle of Liguria and is served by a ferry boat service, connecting the isle to La Spezia and
Portovenere. In summertime, the isle hosts several cultural events. Tino is a Military Area and can only be accessed on the day
of San Venerio, the 13 of September.
